“Ella? Ella!”
It was like time slowed down, everything around him was either frozen in place or moved very slowly. The way Ella’s body fell to the ground and his voice calling out her name was very slow, very sluggish. Garrus felt his feet lift from the ground like a feather, like low gravity places where he could practically float across a-hundred feet. This was the first time in a long time Garrus did the impossible, making his way over to the limp body of Commander Ella Shepard, his hands searching for release latches on her armor. He was frantic, but his training in C-Sec taught him to push away conflicting feelings and think first. He had to think, and this meant to save Ella’s life.
She had taken a bullet somewhere, he could feel blood pool and seep through the cracks of his own armor and soak the material underneath that shielded his flesh and vulnerable form. Her eyes were fluttering and Garrus turned her onto her side, trying to catch his breath as he saw the damage that was done to her backside. Burnt and twisted metal of her armor, revealing charred skin and bone of her shoulder blades. Ella must’ve taken a rocket launcher shielding him. Damn it Ella! He thought, trying to keep her as comfortable in these final moments.
Garrus let her lie on her side, and his chest covering her mutilated back. He held her hand, pressed his chin against her cheek as his eyes searched the area for any help, he called out. Nothing responded. He could feel Ella squeeze his hand lightly, a smile creeping onto her beautiful lips. Then it hit him, hard like swift punch to the face or even better—a missile to the face.
Shudders came, and he couldn’t help but give-out a watery laugh. She was going and this hurt him greatly seeing her die. But he knew she was content at the moment, the way she used all of her strength to give him a grin. How she didn’t bat a lash when his tears washed her face. Maybe they’d finally meet at the bar, maybe they wouldn’t for a while. But Garrus would make sure Ella’s name was remembered all over the Galaxy after this day.
